About Me

Oh the places I’ve been…

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.

And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…”

― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

about me elaine johnston

Welcome to elaine j.com!

I’m elaine j. I do all the writing, photography and whatever else it takes to make elaine j.com come to life…

For the past 20 years I have been living in the Fairfield Glade resort community of Crossville, Tennessee (right off Interstate 40 between Knoxville  and Nashville) where I have enjoyed many years working as a “personal travel planner” – a title I have bestowed upon myself in place of “travel agent”, “travel consultant”, or “travel counselor”…

I created elaine j.com when I realized it was time for me to follow my longtime dream of adding writing to my life’s work. I’ve always had the dream but now have the passion at the ripe old age of 75! (you know – “The Colonel” didn’t start frying chickens until he was 80! I have lots of time…Oh! – and – let’s not forget Grandma Moses!!!)

One reason I never took writing seriously until now is that I HATE rejection! I hated the thought of getting those awful “thanks but no thanks” letters in the mail saying we’re sorry we’re not able to run your story just now. Thank goodness for small favors like blogs. The writing is a bit different and you eventually become your own publisher which I like very much.  A publisher gets to call the shots…

Because I’ve been living travel since 1972 – and by “living travel” I mean being a travel planner in one form or another by orchestrating excursions for clients to all parts of the world – myself included – I’m not about to give up my day job…I’ve been at it too long…I’ll still be here to answer your questions and take care of your travel needs utilizing resources available to me through my travel consulting firm – The Glade Explorers Travel.

What I do intend to do – though – is share with you some of the places I’ve been via planes, trains, and automobiles along with a few photos thrown in to add variety – might throw in a few short blurbs about driving an 18-wheeler – and maybe a story here and there about traveling with my granddaughters – a day at the Jersey Shore when Tess forgot to put shoes on before leaving the house may be a good place to start…never know. But then again – I will probably be guilty of telling you a thing or two about travel options available that just may be of interest to you and yours.

I’m sure living just about in the middle of  two distinct cities – Knoxville to the East- site of the 1982 World’s Fair – and Nashville to the West – most times called “Music City” – will provide food for thought for an article or two…And then there’s  “The Land of More” – better known as Pigeon Forge and it’s surrounding areas of Gatlinburg, Sevierville (home to Dolly Parton and Dollywood) and Great Smoky Mountain National Park all of which are but a 90 minute drive East from home. Did I mention that “home”  is often referred to as  “The Golf Capital of Tennessee?”  Sad to say – in all these past 20 years my clubs have yet to come out of their hiding place in the garage – that’s how bad I am! Rejection is one thing – but – self induced humiliation?!

I’m new to digital art and hope to incorporate that new passion into this blog.  Not sure how – but I’ll figure it out. Perhaps something like what you see below:

And – there was a time I did lots of cooking and still enjoy trying new recipes – especially ones I find along the way. Love going through small-town book stores and coming home with regional cook books as well as browsing gift shops found on cruise ships and in most hotels. Of course – the hard part is trying to find those “regional” ingredients in Crossville, Tennessee…but that’s a story for another time. Perhaps if I share those recipes with you we can swap ideas of what to use as substitutes…think about it!

I’ll be doing my best to bring you the best, so let me know what you think and your suggestions. Your thoughtful comments and support will make this journey so meaningful and gratifying.  You may leave a comment at the end of a post, email me, pin me, or like me. Don’t “like” me too much because then I’ll have to spend a good part of the day trying to figure out Facebook…just can’t get the hang of it in my old age…:)

I guess this would be a good time to mention that I will be suggesting a few products here and there that will provide a bit of income – not much – but some. Hopefully enough to keep the lights on. I need to tell you this so the “affiliate police” don’t come after me. That being said – I’m a firm believer that we’re all entitled to make a living if  done in a professional and ethical manner. That’s the only way I can do business…I’ve never been able to recommend anything to anyone I don’t believe in…

Thanks for stopping by…have a happy day wherever you are!

to be continued…
